Will my child be given Australian citizenship if they were born in Australia?
Your child will automatically be given Australian citizenship if:
- the child was born in Australia
- at least one of the child’s parents was an Australian citizen or permanent resident when the child was born.

An eligible New Zealand citizen is a New Zealand citizen who was living in Australia on 26 February 2001 or for at least one year in the two years immediately before 26 February 2001.
An eligible New Zealand citizen can:
- sponsor family members for an Australian permanent visa
- access certain social security payments
- obtain Australian citizenship.

Citizenship by birth—from 27 February 2001
A child born in Australia on or after 27 February 2001 to a New Zealand citizen parent is not an Australian citizen by birth unless the New Zealand citizen parent:
- held an Australian permanent visa
- was a dual Australian-New Zealand citizen
- was covered by the transitional arrangements for the 26 February 2001 changes.
