Waitakere police say there will be a high policing presence for the ISA World Junior Surf Championships at Piha Beach to ensure the event will be trouble free and enjoyable for everyone.
The championships commence today and continue until 28 January 2010.
Operation Pipeline Commander Senior Sergeant Regan James says the police presence provides safety and security for competitors and community alike.
“The primary focus of police will be on enforcement and compliance of the twenty four hour liquor ban that is already in existence, the increased traffic flows to and from Piha, a zero tolerance to speeding driver behaviours, and merging with the daily crowds which are estimated to reach 10,000 people.”
“A mobile police station has been established next to the Piha Beach fire station. Officers from throughout the Waitematä and the Auckland Police Districts plus Highway Patrol, TAG and Team Policing Units are deployed.”
“This event is of significant importance to New Zealand’s status as a holder of major events. We’ll be under a global microscope,” said Mr. James.
“We simply want everyone to act responsibly, so that all those attending especially the international visitors can enjoy the best New Zealand has to offer in sun, surfing and security,” the Operation Pipeline Commander said.
