Suspicious scrub fire at Stanmore Bay

Rodney CIB is investigating a suspicious scrub fire in suburban Stanmore Bay, which damaged an area of land estimated at 200 square meters and caused one family to evacuate their home.
Police say that 5.00pm Wednesday 10 November 2010 the fire service attended at Riverhaven Drive close to the junction of Scott Road in Stanmore Bay. Fourteen appliances were required.
There were real fears the fire would spread to a nearby house so the home and its occupants were evacuated. The fire service deployed a helicopter to drop water onto the fire in an effort to contain it. After about an hour the occupants were eventually able to return to their home.
Police say an off white or cream colored sedan was seen on Riverhaven Drive at about the time the fire started. There were three or four male occupants in the vehicle. They would like to speak to these people so that they can be eliminated from the investigations now in progress.
Anyone with knowledge of the circumstances that caused the fire, can contact Detective Jane Thew at Orewa Police on 09 427 6281. Alternatively information can be given anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
