Internal Affairs Minister Nathan Guy has announced the reappointment of Judge Carolyn Henwood as Chair of the Confidential Listening and Assistance Service.
The service was established in late 2008 to provide a confidential environment in which people can discuss their concerns about abuse, neglect, or the way they were treated in state care before 1992. This includes people who spent time in psychiatric hospitals, health camps, child welfare homes, foster care, and special education homes.
“I am very pleased that Judge Henwood has agreed to continue as Chair of the service. Since her appointment in June 2008 she has demonstrated great leadership and diplomacy in this very important role.
“Her ability to handle delicate and sensitive issues raised by participants is very important,” Mr Guy said.
The service gives participants the chance to discuss their experiences and concerns with a panel of qualified people. It helps participants access information and services, and helps them come to terms with their experiences.
The panel usually consists of three people and travels around the country to meet with participants and their supporters.
It is expected that the service will operate for up to five years. People can find out more about the service via the website www.listening.govt.nz or by phoning 0800 356 567.
