Applications are now open for Auckland Council’s Regional Environment and Natural Heritage (RENH) grants programme, with grants of up to $40,000 available for eligible projects.
“The aim of the programme is to support environmental and sustainability projects that encourage the protection, restoration and enhancement of Auckland’s natural environment,” says Auckland Council’s General Manager for Environmental Services Gael Ogilvie.
“It is a tāonga, and we are very keen to support those who are actively involved in looking after it.”
Success story
This is the second year the grant programme has run. One example of a successful project from last year is the Habitat Te Henga Pāteke Monitoring Project at Te Henga wetland in west Auckland.
The Waitākere branch of Forest & Bird New Zealand received a grant of $11,016 to help monitor survival rates of pāteke (NZ brown teal) released at Te Henga. Twenty of the 80 birds released were fitted with transmitters and a contractor was hired to monitor their dispersion across the 160ha wetland and upstream in Bethells Valley. This year, the first clutches of ducklings were spotted in the area.
Apply now
Applications are open until Friday 9 September.
Projects will need to meet at least one of a list of criteria, such as regionally focused initiatives that promote sustainable living or protection of regionally significant sites of indigenous biodiversity.
