Funding available to prevent food waste
FACT: About 40 per cent of what the average household puts out in their rubbish each week is food waste, which goes to landfill. What’s more, avoidable food waste costs the average household $563 a year, with Kiwis spending an estimated $872 million a year on food that then gets thrown away uneaten.
Do you have an idea to prevent or reduce food waste? Well now’s the time to kick that plan into action, with the opening of Auckland Council’s first ever Love Food Hate Waste Fund.
The fund has $40,000 overall, with maximum funding of $1000 per application. But get in quick – applications close Friday 30 September.
It is ideal for community groups, schools and individuals needing financial support for innovative food waste prevention projects or initiatives.
Examples of events that could receive funding include:
- a community cook-off
- running a preserves-making workshop
- having a local chef or home cook demonstrate food saving techniques
- hosting a movie screening or discussion group
- running a Love Food Hate Waste stand at a community event
- Love Food Hate Waste projects in schools
- food waste reduction initiatives in businesses
- cooking demonstrations at a community garden.

Please note, that the fund is designed to prevent food waste, not solutions to deal with food waste already binned. Funding applications for composting and Bokashi can be made through theWaste Minimisation Innovation Fund.
