A WW1 Memorial Brass plaque that was reported stolen from a headstone of at the Omakau Cemetary in Central Otago has been located in the care of a family member.
Senior Constable Darren Cox from the Omakau Police was contacted by an Alexandra man following publicity about the missing plaque.
He is a distant relative and confimed that the plaque had been removed so it could be cleaned and an imprint taken to send to members of the extended family.
“The plaque has been removed with the best of intentions, but unfortunately there has been a mix up with communication”, Mr Cox said.
“It caused considerable distress to the family to suddenly find it gone, but it is a relief for everyone to know that it is safe and that it will be returned to the cemetary shortly.”
Mr Cox thanked the public for their help in locating the plaque. “The response from the public, both within our local community and nationally, has been amazing, and it is the publicity that made the man aware that we were looking for the plaque” he said. “It is a nice outcome for the family.”
