Watch the story of Matariki
In celebration of Matariki Festival 2016 Auckland Libraries has created a short video that tells the story of the dawning of the Māori new year. This story is one version of many different interpretations of Matariki.
Ripeka Read, Auckland Libraries digital content graduate said, "I was fortunate to collaborate with some extremely talented people on this project and work with other Māori who are passionate about storytelling."
A special mention to Parekura Pewhairangi (Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Kahungunu) who crafted the story and wrote the script, Matia Mitai-Ngatai (Te Arawa) who provided the audio track from the Rangiatea CD and Hawaiki Tū, a contemporary company of Māori performing artists who brought the story to life.
Ngā mata o te ariki, o Tāwhirimātea (The eyes of the god,Tāwhirimātea) will be projected onto the walls of the St James Theatre building during the Tūrama Matariki Light Show at Central Library on Thursday 14 July and Friday 15 July.
There will also be an animated 3D Matariki story illustrated by street artist Janine Williams (Ngāti Paoa) projected onto the building, and plenty of entertainment for all of the whanau including fire poi, drumming, kapa haka and more.
