The latest Household Labour Force Survey for the June quarter has shown a significant increase in unemployment amongst ethnic communities, says Labour’s Associate Ethnic Affairs spokesperson Dr Ashraf Choudhary.
“The Government needs to do more to combat the rise in ethnic unemployment. The ethnic unemployment rate has soared from 10.9 percent in 2009 to 13.8 percent this year.
“These statistics prove that the Government has been ineffective in addressing ethnic unemployment. This rise has also come at a very difficult time for families, with GST increasing and the expansion of the ‘fire at will’ law. These will only increase uncertainty for the ethnic sector.
“It is vital that ethnic communities are supported in securing long-term employment. Many families cannot afford to be out of work and this Government has no plan to address these issues,” Dr Choudhary said.
