Our Auckland Conversations panel have their say on transport
At our Auckland Conversations event on transport as part of the 10-year Budget and Auckland Plan 2050 consultation, we discussed the challenges facing Auckland's transport system.
We asked our panel of industry experts if they thought a regional fuel tax is the right way to address our transport challenges.
Check out their views below.
Traffic congestion affects everyone. It’s frustrating and costs Auckland $1 billion to $2 billion a year in lost productivity. We need to invest significantly in our transport infrastructure, particularly public and active transport, to ensure our city does not grind to a halt.
So we are proposing to work with the government to introduce a fuel tax of 10c per litre plus GST to fund transport projects in Auckland. This would allow us to decongest our roads by investing in more rail, buses, cycle and walkways, and improvements to our road network.
