Waiheke Island has once again come up trumps internationally, being named as one of the world’s best islands and a top regional destination in the World’s Best Awards 2016 survey.
The island, located in Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf, has been selected as the fourth best island in the world and top island in Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific by Travel + Leisure magazine’s readers.
Every year, readers of Travel + Leisure – the largest travel magazine brand in the United States – vote on their favourite destinations, accommodation, airlines and other travel-related categories as part of the World's Best Awards survey.
This year marks the 21st edition of the survey, with Waiheke Island coming out on top of one of the survey’s new categories as well as fourth in the world. Palawan, Philippines came in first, Boracay, Philippines took second place, Ischia, Italy took third.
Jason Hill, Head of Tourism at Auckland Tourism, Events & Economic Development (ATEED) – the Auckland region’s economic growth agency – says this accolade reinforces Waiheke Island’s status as one of the jewels in Auckland’s crown.
“Waiheke is fast becoming known as a one of the world’s must-visit destinations, offering a great range of attractions that cater to all tastes and all within easy reach of Auckland’s city centre, just 35 minutes by ferry.”
Mayor Len Brown says: “We welcome this great endorsement from the readers of Travel + Leisure. It’s fantastic to hear the island’s award-winning wineries and restaurants, and stunning scenery, range of arts attractions and adventure activities are clearly getting recognised around the world.”
Nathan Lump, Travel + Leisure Editor, says: “Travel + Leisure readers travel to every corner of the globe and I’m pleased to see they are making it to — and loving what they are finding in — New Zealand’s Waiheke Island.
“In addition to a beautiful natural environment and a laid-back atmosphere, the island is also an excellent destination for those who appreciate great food and wine.”
Bjoern Spreitzer, General Manager Americas and Europe for Tourism New Zealand, adds: “We’re thrilled that Waiheke Island has been recognised in Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards 2016.”
“From picturesque white sand beaches, to award-winning wineries and adrenaline-pumping adventure, Waiheke Island is a perfect holiday spot for American travellers.”
This latest accolade for Waiheke Island follows it being included in Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2016 as one of the world’s top 10 regions to visit for 2016 and listed as the fourth best island in the world by Condé Nast Traveler for 2016.
