Learn to sign for NZSL Week

It's the 10th annual NZ Sign Language (NZSL) Week. This May also marks 10 years since NZSL became an official language of New Zealand.

As one of the country’s official languages, NZSL is used daily by more than 24,000 New Zealanders. Rather than simply being a signed representation of spoken English, it is a separate language with its own structure and grammar.

To celebrate, Auckland Council is encouraging all Aucklanders to learn some basic sign language. It could be something as simple as learning to sign your name. Here are some great, fun resources to get you started:

NZSL Alphabet: A free, downloadable PDF to help you learn to sign the NZSL alphabet. Master your own name and teach your whānau, family and friends to sign theirs.

Sign Ninja – an interactive online game and resource designed to help you learn, practice and explore NZSL. Play Sign Ninja on your desktop or mobile.
