North Shore ward councillor Chris Darby says the approval of the action plan for Takapuna Town Centre is a massive kick-start for the area.

A more connected and attractive town centre is one step closer after the approval of an important action plan for Takapuna.

Auckland Council’s Development Committee recently approved a high-level project plan developed by council-controlled organisation Panuku Development Auckland.

Making better use of land

The plan recommends better use of council-owned sites to bring more commercial activity and residential development into the area and make the most of Takapuna’s unique sea and lakeside setting.

Auckland Council owns 3.85ha of land in the Takapuna town centre, centred on the Anzac Street car park and the Gasometer site, which runs between Huron, Auburn and Northcroft streets.

The potential for better use of these sites has been well outlined and consulted on, most recently in the Takapuna Centre Plan. The approval of the high-level project plan last week gives direction to Panuku to find the best way to implement the concepts developed in previous plans.

'Massive kick-start' for town centre

North Shore ward councillor Chris Darby is excited about what this means for Takapuna.

“After a decade of false starts the revitalisation of Takapuna has been given a massive kick-start the by council,” he says.

"The somewhat soulless Anzac Street and Gasometer car parks are begging to offer better. Potential exists for a wonderful public square and interesting laneways for markets and people gathering at the Anzac Street site, shouldered by superbly designed retail, office and living environments.”

Sunday market will stay

The Anzac street car park is currently home to the Takapuna Sunday market. Panuku recognises that this is a treasured weekly community event and is committed to its ongoing future.

Panuku will work closely with the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board and the market operator to review options for its future.
