Auckland Zoo's African lovebirds are taking longer than expected to settle into their new home. To give these birds the extra time they need, the opening of the walkthrough aviary section of this new area (also home to the leopard tortoises, and some of the meerkats and meerkat tunnels) has been postponed.

Auckland Zoo will open the aviary to visitors as soon as its bird experts are confident the lovebirds are ready, and will let everyone know with updates on the zoo’s website, and on its Facebook page and email newsletter.

As well as exploring the rest of the Zoo, visitors who are coming in over the Easter weekend can still look forward to exploring other areas of the new African savannah.

These include seeing the smaller meerkat group, and from a stunning new ground-level wildlife hide, looking out over the new watering hole to see giraffe, zebra and ostrich. These animals can also be viewed from the high viewing platforms alongside the new rock amphitheatre.

Auckland Zoo’s new African savannah opens on Good Friday 25 March.

Meerkats, leopard tortoises and lovebirds have moved in and the team at the zoo is working hard to finish off the last touches. Watch for a sneak preview of our new African savannah opening this Easter!
