Nearly $3 billion of new dwellings were consented in Auckland in the 12 months ended November 2015, new figures show. The total 8,900 new dwellings consented show steady growth over the period, said John Dunshea, General Manager of Auckland Council’s Development Programme Office.

Mr Dunshea said: “These are really encouraging figures, showing the trend line – which accounts for seasonal and one-off fluctuations – now nearing 900 consents a month.

“Auckland’s housing challenge is one all successful cities around the world are facing. The council is committed to working with the government and the wider community to meet that challenge.

"We are working with developers and builders to make the process as streamlined as possible, unlocking opportunities, coordinating infrastructure and easing the way to development."

The figures released by Statistics New Zealand show the area with the most new dwellings consented in the 12 month-period was Albany, followed by Waitematā and Gulf, and Manurewa-Papakura.
