There will be mild temperatures for New Zealand this weekend, with eastern places potentially reaching 30C on Saturday. However, a front moves up the country through Saturday and Sunday bringing rain to many and strong winds to central New Zealand.

Things are warming up today, with Blenheim airport recording 28C at 1pm.Temperatures continue to be mild on Friday, with a warm and moist northwesterly flow across the country. This will bring patchy rain to the west, but things will stay dry in the east.

On Saturday the North Island will receive some scattered showers northwest of Taupo and some morning drizzle further south, but dry conditions continue in the east. Meanwhile, a front moves over the South Island bringing heavy rain to western areas and scattered falls elsewhere, but only a few spots about the east coast.

"Temperatures could approach 30C in places in Canterbury, Marlborough,Hawke's Bay and Gisborne," said meteorologist Emma Blades. "Northwesterlies will be strong in places as the front moves northwards,  reaching the lower North Island on Saturday night. Rain ahead of the front  will reach Wellington in the evening," commented Ms Blades.

The band of rain will move up the North Island through Sunday, with only a few spots falling in eastern areas and conditions clearing behind. Sunday in the South Island will be fairly sunny, with just a few showers in the west and south.

"The start of next week brings blue skies and light winds to most as high pressure builds, but the far south continues to receive showers," added Ms Blades.
