Ten signs have been stolen from Avondale Central Reserve children’s Learn-to-Ride Track.

The track is designed to help children learn cycling road rules.

The signs are smaller than normal road signs, at 300mm x 300mm. The stolen signs depict ‘give way’, ‘stop’, ‘pedestrian crossing ahead’ and traffic lights.

Whau Local Board chair Catherine Farmer says it is very disappointing that this has happened. “Our board provided funding for the signs and the track to give children a safe area to learn and play, and to help activate the Avondale town centre. It is upsetting that this work has been undone by the theft of these signs.”

“We really need to support Avondale to becoming a place where there are safe activities for children and adults. The Whau Arts Festival opening tonight will help activate the Avondale community in a positive way. I hope the signs can be recovered.”

Auckland Council encourages people to contact the police if they notice the signs being offered for scrap metal or have any information on their location.

Council will be looking at options to replace the signs.
