A front will move north over New Zealand during Monday and Tuesday bringing rain, before clearing the country on Wednesday.

"Most places will get wet weather with this front, but the second half of the week is looking mainly dry," said Metservice Meteorologist Stephen Glassey.

On Monday, rain spreads onto the South Island and lower North Island, with the heaviest falls in western areas. A cold southerly change behind the front is also expected to bring brief snow to 400 metres in parts of Southland and Otago.

Tuesday will be the wettest day for the North Island, while the rain gradually clears from most South Island places.

A ridge of high pressure builds over New Zealand during Wednesday and Thursday, clearing the rain from the North Island and leaving fine weather for most areas. However, another front approaches from the Tasman Sea during Friday. "This will likely bring a return to rain on the weekend," commented Glassey.
