Weather smorgasbord for the country this week

This week’s weather is being cooked up with only the finest ingredients from the south pacific.

Today we have a t...hick slice of warm subtropical air served up on a southerly surge. This is peppered with a smattering of watches and warnings for strong winds and heavy rain over central New Zealand, the eastern Bay of Plenty and the western South Island.

Wednesday will be today’s leftovers – easing showers in the south but the heavy rain sticking around north of Taupo, then sliding back south towards Manawatu and the Wairarapa in the evening. Wednesday night a low from the tropics blends itself into the mix. This sets the plate for Thursday, with widespread rain across the North Island, garnished with strong winds.

The frozen dessert comes straight from the Antarctic freezer on Friday. A strong surge of polar air reaches Southland and works up through the South Island on Saturday and into the North Island early Sunday. Expect a frosting of snow in the mountains and in the far south, although there too much uncertainty at present to decide exactly to what levels it will fall.
