Counties Manukau Police is referring a 15-year-old boy to Youth Aid following a brawl during a rugby match in Otahuhu last month.

Counties Manukau West Area Commander Jason Hewett says after a lengthy investigation which involved interviewing a large number of people, Police have established who they believe was responsible for throwing a punch which left a 15-year-old boy unconscious.

But Inspector Hewett says a number of people at the game, including the adults, need to take responsibility for their actions.

“This was a high school rugby match, that sort of behaviour is absolutely unacceptable and will not be tolerated in the community. Everyone who attends sport events like this needs to be safe and feel safe while attending.”

“If you see behaviour at a sports match that you think is inappropriate or threatening towards players or spectators then do not be afraid to draw it to the attention of team officials.

“Parents and caregivers should lead by example, by being enthusiastic but remembering this is a game, and everyone is there, including the referees and coaches for the growth, development and enjoyment of the children and teenagers.”

Meanwhile, The Auckland Rugby Union’s independent Judicial Committee met last week to review the abandoned match between Otahuhu College and Tangaroa College Under 15s.

The panel ruled that the referee was justified in calling the match off and that neither teams would receive competition points.
Further to that a fine was imposed on both teams, which is refundable if specific conditions are met.

Auckland Rugby Union CEO Andy Dalton thanked the Police for their support in dealing with the matter.

“It was an unsavoury incident that took place and one we hope not to see again,” said Dalton.

“We are trialling new initiatives in an effort to improve sideline behaviour that complement the New Zealand Rugby Applaud campaign. We are also working with Aktive Auckland and other codes to make sure all sporting environments are positive.”
