The Korea Studies Workshop gives New Zealand teachers the opportunity to travel to Korea and learn about the country firsthand.

The purpose of the programme is to deepen teachers' awareness, understanding and knowledge of Korea, and help them realise the importance of the country and the region to New Zealand so they can better equip students with the knowledge and skills they'll need in the future.

Dates: The 2015 programme will be held during the September/October school holidays.

Programme details

The programme consists of lectures, school visits and field trips to sites of historical and contemporary relevance.

Up to 15 candidates will be selected to take part in the programme, which is sponsored by the Korea Foundation in partnership with the Asia New Zealand Foundation.

Eligibility

To apply, you must be a:

  • fully registered teacher working at a New Zealand secondary or intermediate school
  • holder of a valid New Zealand passport.

Priority will be given to secondary school teachers of social sciences, but applications from intermediate teachers will be considered.

Conditions

Successful applicants will be required to sign an agreement with the Foundation agreeing to all award conditions and programme details.

Following the workshop, you will need to submit relevant teaching resources (a series of lessons or unit of work) based on your experiences in Korea.

Costs

  • Accommodation, most meals and international airfares are covered by the Korea Foundation and the Asia New Zealand Foundation.
  • You will be responsible for your own travel to Auckland airport, travel insurance and spending money.

Please note: Accommodation is twin share. If you wish to have a single room, you'll need to pay an accommodation supplement. While most meals are provided, you may have to cover your own meal costs during periods allocated for free time.

How to apply

We're now taking expressions of interest for the 2015 programme. Please email schools coordinator Sean O'Connor with your name and school by 5pm on Friday 29 May.

Selection criteria

In selecting candidates for the workshop, we’ll be looking at:

  • your reasons for taking part in the workshop, and what you hope to achieve by participating. We'll also look at whether these reasons are well-presented and aligned with the programme’s purpose
  • the extent to which your school is integrating Asia into the school curriculum
  • your ideas and plans for further developing your students and school to be Asia-equipped
  • what resources you believe you could develop by taking part in the workshop; and which networks you could utilise to disseminate what you’ve learned
