Aucklanders aged 5 to 15 will travel for free on Auckland Transport's bus, train and ferry services when using a registered AT HOP card on weekends and public holidays.
The new fare comes as part of the $1.1 million contribution from Auckland Council towards public transport initiatives announced earlier in the year.
Mayor Goff says, "Every person on public transport is one less car creating traffic congestion on our roads and adding carbon emissions to our atmosphere".
"Free public transport for under 16 year olds on weekends and public holidays will help get more families onto our buses and trains and encourage the next generation of Aucklanders to become public transport users."
Stacey van der Putten, Group Manager Manger of Metro Services says that starting this new initiative is perfect timing. "As we head into the warmer months, families will be able to enjoy time together and explore the region without worrying about the traffic."
"We just want to remind parents and children that before you head out, you need to make sure every child has an AT HOP card that’s registered with a child concession"
