Devil's Cigar aflame in Wintergarden

The Devil’s Cigar or Fiery Spike (formally known as Aphelandra aurantiaca) treats visitors to a flame of vibrant colour in the depths of winter.

It is a tropical plant native to the central American rainforest. It produces a short but spectacular display of bright orange flowers in the middle of winter followed by seed pods that explosively eject their seed long distances when ripe.

The Devil's Cigar is currently on display in the Auckland Domain Wintergardens Tropical House.
