Work started on Takapuna's new playground
The first sod has been turned on Takapuna's new world-class playground project at Takapuna Beach Reserve.
Features of the playground will include a water play area, a large wheelchair-accessible merry-go-round, all-abilities swings, a wheelchair-accessible trampoline, an all-abilities seesaw, climbing ropes, picnic tables, park benches, a tower, slides, and more.
Worksite fencing and project signage is up, and earthworks are set to start in early April. Construction is expected to take 8-12 weeks.
The new playground has a total value of around $950,000. This includes related costs of playground design, council consenting, project management, purchase and importation of equipment, earthworks and playground construction.
Locals also donate
Devonport-Takapuna Local Board have supported the project by providing land use approval, $25,000 for playground design consultancy, underwritten $75,000 of its construction costs, and will assist with an opening event once construction is completed.
Jackie Kerridge and Christopher Reeve, the local couple who donated generously to make this playground a reality, attended the sod-turning event with their grandchildren and did the honours with the spade.
