Waitawa Regional Park will be closed from 2 June to 3 August 2015 so that the main access road can be repaired following significant slips last year.
The park received 192mm of rain over 13 hours, with 145mm of that in just seven hours. The slips affected the hill side leading down to Mataitai Bay, the park’s main beach, picnic area and the Kōherurahi Pā site.
Major repair work is required to stabilise the road, and remove unsafe trees throughout the park. This remediation work will include the installation of a large retaining wall on the main access road to Mataitai Bay.
Whilst this is underway, further development work on the mountain bike and walking tracks will be completed as well as a self-contained campervan site.
The park will be entirely closed during the reparation period so that works can be undertaken in a safe manner.
Principal Ranger Tony Oliver says that this slip repair work is crucial to reopen the access road and the closure is required for the safety and wellbeing of our park visitors.
