On Tuesday 25 September the Environment Court granted consent for bases and associated infrastructure to host the 36th America’s Cup race in Auckland.

Auckland Mayor Phil Goff welcomed the decision.

“It opens up the ability for us now to get on and create the infrastructure needed for the team bases and to ensure a great America’s Cup event for Auckland and New Zealand.

“Today’s decision is the culmination of a huge amount of work by Auckland Council, the government and Team New Zealand to create an America’s Cup village that limits encroachment on the harbour, is sympathetic to the local community and businesses, and will deliver a fantastic event for New Zealand.

“Auckland will be a great host for the America’s Cup. We are ready to put on a spectacular event for sailing fans and showcase Auckland and New Zealand to the world.​

“Over the next couple of months, we will see Team New Zealand move into the Viaduct Events Centre to begin its preparation for the Cup defence, and a start to the building of the Hobson Wharf base for Luna Rossa. The demolition of the hazardous substances tanks at the South end of Wynyard Point will then take place, marking a new future for the precinct,” Phil Goff said.
