Dig into community planting days
Planting season is kicking off, so why not #livelightly and take the pledge to get involved with a community planting day?
Tree planting is a great way to get outdoors, whether for a family afternoon or volunteer trip with work. It helps native species thrive too, supports local biodiversity, and hungry planters usually tuck into a reward sausage sizzle at the end of the day!
To get you started we’ve put together a selection of upcoming planting days happening across Auckland.
Awaawaroa Wetland, Waiheke Island
Be part of an important wetland restoration project on Waiheke Island!
- Sunday 10 and Sunday 24 June, 10am-1pm
- Sunday 15 and Sunday 29 July, 10am–1pm
Celebrate Matariki by planting 60,000 trees across June and July as part of the mayor’s Million Trees programme. There’s a free tree for every volunteer from the Trees That Count Trust.
Totara Park, Manurewa

Metro Park East, Millwater
- Sunday 17 June, 10am-12pm
Puhinui Reserve, Manukau

Join this local community project to restore the historic Waipapa Stream that runs alongside the Auckland Domain.

Atiu Creek Regional Park, Tapora, Wellsford
Plant native trees and shrubs at Atiu Creek Regional Park on the Kaipara Harbour. We’re aiming to plant 32,000 trees this winter – and you can help.
- Saturday 7 July, 8.30am-4.30pm
What to wear and bring:
Plantings go ahead rain, hail or shine. Wear gumboots or closed-toe shoes and appropriate outdoor clothing. Bring your favourite spade, gardening gloves, water and sunscreen, and check your boots and tools are free of mud before you arrive.
