Auckland Council wants your feedback on the resource consent application to undertake construction of the Ōrewa coastal walkway and seawall.

Construction plans

The application is for the construction of a 600m seawall at the northern end of Ōrewa Beach, between Kohu Street and Marine View. The application also includes:

  • A footpath and landscaping along the esplanade reserve behind the seawall.
  • Access structures including ramps and stairs.
  • Parks infrastructure and amenities such as landscaping, drainage and lighting.
  • Associated works within Kinloch Reserve.

Victor Eaves Reserve will be used as a construction storage area during works.

The purpose of the application

The purpose of the application is twofold: to maintain and enhance public open space quality and recreation opportunities along this part of Ōrewa Beach, and to enhance walking and cycling connections for persons of all abilities within Ōrewa township and along the Hibiscus Coast. The seawall is a permanent, long-term solution in an area where the esplanade reserve is narrow and subject to ongoing erosion during storm events.

“This is an exciting time in the project as we look to finalise the details of the seawall,” says Auckland Council’s Head of Project Delivery John Schermbrucker.

“The public notification period gives residents the opportunity to find out more about the finalised proposed seawall design and associated works. When it’s completed the seawall will enable greater access for more people of all abilities to and along one of Auckland’s most beautiful beaches.”
