A forward looking transport plan to support major growth areas in the north, north-west and south of the region has been completed.

The plan, Supporting Growth – Delivering Transport Networks, is needed to meet the scale of growth expected in new urban areas over 30 years.

Auckland CouncilAuckland Transport and the NZ Transport Agency partnered to identify transport networks supporting 15,000ha of ‘greenfield’ land with a capacity for 110,000 homes and 50,000 jobs.

It also supports the council’s Future Urban Land Supply Strategy, a programme for the release of land for development as infrastructure becomes available.

The plan will play a key role in delivering some of the priorities laid out in the Auckland Transport Alignment Project, a collaboration between the council and the government to invest in the city’s transport infrastructure.

Chair of the planning committee, Councillor Chris Darby, said the Supporting Growth plan, prepared with input from local boards, mana whenua, key stakeholders and communities, was a fine example of key partners working together to resolve transport challenges in a joined up way.

“The plan is a major step forward in transport planning and covers options for public transport, local and state highway networks, and walking and cycling improvements. These are now being prioritised for funding.”
