An active front is set to cross the country during Saturday, bringing a period of rain for most people and the risk of some heavy falls for the west. However, it should be well to the east by early Sunday leaving a strong disturbed southwest flow in its wake.

Over the North Island the rain sets in for the afternoon, and may mean a damp start for Coca-Cola Christmas in the Park at the Auckland Domain, with the front passing over the Auckland area early evening. "The timing will be  critical with this front," commented MetService forecaster Cameron Coutts. "Hopefully the front arrives earlier, then conditions will improve  considerably by the end of the show."

Further south, it is also looking like rain on the first day of Very Welly Christmas in the Capital which runs both Saturday and Sunday. "If you can  choose which day to go to, then Sunday is looking the better day  weather-wise, with just the chance of an odd shower and a brief southerly," said Coutts.

Elsewhere, the weather should improve in most places on Sunday especially in the north and east of the country, while a few showers pepper the west and south.
