The best of Pacific art and culture near you

The Urbanesia fun rolls on for the second week of the festival with a raft of activities and events in the K Rd – Ponsonby Road neighbourhoods.

Friday night

It begins with a wild and sophisticated Fia Fia night on Friday 18 November at Galatos as Tautai celebrates its 30 year anniversary.

Further south from 7pm, Hawkins Theatre hosts the winning stars of the Vodafone Pacific Music Awards. Enjoy on stage, Vince Harder, Team Dynamite, TJ Taotua and Mikey Mayz or be in the Papakura town centre at 12.30pm for a pop up performance, giving a sneak preview of the night’s performance.

Saturday

Head to Ōtara for Culture Clash where Breaks NZ and artists from the TMD Crew bring the town centre alive with hip hop dance battles and aerosol art.

Or head across the motorway to the Nathan Homestead in Manurewa for SMILE: Portrait of a Community, where the ManaRewa collective of Pacific artists photograph families as part of a future exhibition.

If you’re in the city, hang out at the Sapphire Room, Ponsonby Central with the Pacifica Mamas, Lonnie Hutchinson, Ani O’Neill and other contemporary Pacific artists at the Tautai Art Emporium.

Sunday

Come Sunday, between 11.00am-3.00pm SaVAge K’lub hosts a CraftyNOON Tea at the Ponsonby Community Centre. Share an afternoon of craft making, make your own regalia or make a star to contribute to Maryann Pau Talia’s “One Million Stars Against Violence” project which will weave into one star to be installed at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

And keep your eye out for Janet Lilo's travelling Banana Booth as it cruises two of Auckland's main creative streets.
