Stuck inside because of the season's fickle weather? It's a great time to get into those clean-up tasks you've been putting off.

Every year, Aucklanders send around 1.2 million tonnes of household and commercial waste to landfill. However, there are things we can all do to reduce our landfill waste, and re-using or re-purposing our resources can make a big difference.

Recycler Directory

Wondering where you can take your old batteries for safe disposal, or if there’s an organisation out there that can repurpose that VCR sitting in the garage?

The Recycler Directory website can point you in the right direction. Select from a list of materials or search by recycling company name to find a recycler who’ll give your unwanted goods a second life.

To read about how your second-hand stuff is being used for good, as well as stories about special people doing great things in the community, check out Make the Most of Waste's Waste Champions.

Donate it!

If your garage or spare room is brimming over with kids’ toys, books, clothes or gear you’ll never use, but someone else might, why not donate it?

Get more information about rubbish and recycling, including a list of organisations that can help you donate your unwanted goods.

Old clothes and bric-a-brac can be sent to the charity of your choice – the Auckland City MissionRed Cross and the Salvation Army all accept donations.

Set up a compost bin

Now that you've cleared out the closets and swept out your storage areas, you might be looking for a new project.

Composting is a great way to keep the goodness in your garden and it's easier and cleaner than you may have thought.

Auckland Council provides support to help you get composting, with workshops held regularly around the region. To find out more visit the Compost Collective
