Auckland Transport, the NZ Transport Agency and Auckland Council will be seeking feedback starting mid-October on a project to make Karangahape Road easier to walk and cycle along.

The objective is to retain K’ Road’s unique character and life while supporting change.

More than 30,000 people enjoyed a car-free festival of music, art, food and performance on Karangahape Road as part of Open Streets 2016.

Cycleways, better footpaths

A concept plan has been developed to help accommodate the huge growth in pedestrians and cyclists that K’ Road is expected to experience in coming years.

If it is endorsed, the plan will create a separated cycleway on each side of the road, widen the footpath in certain areas to give priority to pedestrians, reduce speed limits, and add landscape and street furniture features.

City Rail Link, light rail network included in plan

Other large transport projects in the area have been included in the plan. They include the City Rail Link station, potential light rail transit, the new bus network, the introduction of double-decker buses and other connection cycling projects.
