A whopping 25,000 athletes are expected to take to the start line when the event kicks off in Auckland next year, marking New Zealand’s first turn as host in the 30-year history of the Games.

Recognised by the International Olympic Committee, the World Masters Games takes place only once every four years, and aims to spread the message that sport is not just for the young and the good.

Opportunity for athletes of all levels

The Games are open to masters-age athletes of all capabilities and encourages participation – whether the goal is to keep fit, have fun, make new friends, achieve new personal bests, or win gold on the world stage.

Elite and amateur sports people alike take part and there are grades to suit everyone, from recreational and social to competitive and A-grade.

There are no eligibility criteria except age, though some entry rules exist for Orienteering and Weightlifting which incorporate World Masters Championships inside WMG2017.

Auckland to come alive

Auckland will come alive during the 10-day event. Forty-eight sports stadiums, clubs, parks and centres across Auckland will act as host venues.

An Entertainment Hub will be open to the public on Queen’s Wharf with daily programming and activities for all ages.

Registered participants are invited to the Opening Ceremony at Eden Park.
