Matariki Festival kicks off with this special Dawn Karakia to herald in the Māori New Year. Also on Saturday is the free Te Atatu Marae Matariki Family Fun Day.
Tikapa, a pouwhenua (land post) carved and led by Ngāti Paoa artists Puhi Thompson and Chris Bailey, provides the striking image for this year’s festival. Ngāti Paoa, of Tāmaki and Hauraki, is the 2016 host iwi. The featured artwork can be found at Waiheke Library
Go Wild on Ice for the opening weekend of the Aotea Square Ice Rink & Ice Slide. For every skater, $1 will be donated to the Auckland Zoo Conservation Fund. Get dressed up as a cheeky kea and enjoy colouring competitions, mask making and face painting.
Part of the region-wide Auckland Festival of Photography, photographer Ilan Wittenberg’s Bare Truth exhibition presents a striking collection of monochrome images of bare-chested Kiwi men.
